About Us
The Sunflowers Chernobyl Appeal is a totally voluntary registered charity no.16217 and is a company limited by guarantee based in Co. Galway, Ireland. We are a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) and rely solely on voluntary donations or fundraisers to keep our projects alive. We are dedicated to helping the Chernobyl Children who live in a contaminated land destroyed by the world’s worst nuclear disaster in 1986. The effects of radiation on the people, the land and the food chain will be there for years to come. The Sunflowers Chernobyl Appeal helps by giving practical voluntary aid and have many years of experience in this field.
We help many children who spend their lives in Orphanages and state institutions, sick children in the home and children who are in need of assistance. Our voluntary workers travel to Belarus to take part in our projects, to improve the conditions of the Chernobyl Children and to deliver or source aid and materials in Belarus. We try to source as much material as possible in Belarus to keep down transportation costs, thus freeing up the finance to be spent on children’s facilities or much needed equipment.
We believe that our efforts to provide day care facilities and sensory rooms are of major importance, as they will help families in many communities to keep their children at home and out of the orphanages and provide a focal point for them to eventually develop their own supports for their children with our assistance.
The Sunflowers Chernobyl Appeal has no paid staff, we are all volunteers, but we do engage the services of specialists in Belarus for physical rehabilitation and development training of special needs children. We rely on voluntary workers and voluntary host families in Ireland to keep our projects alive.
Images: The images on our website have been carefully chosen to protect the children's privacy and dignity. We believe that showing disturbing images, be they in photos or video, or exploiting the children in order to raise funds, is wrong. The children and their families have feelings too, and as a charity we will always respect this.
