Sunflowers Homes For Independent Living - Bogushevsk Orphanage

Situated outside the walls of Bogushevsk Orphanage in north eastern Belarus, these former shells of houses have become homes for independent living for special-needs young adults. Sunflowers volunteers travelled to Belarus to begin the work of transforming the houses into comfortable homes. Working closely with the Director and staff of the Orphanage we have created homes which will offer independence and dignity to many special-needs young adults who will have the chance to lead full and active lives in the local community. The staff at Bogushevsk Orphanage have prepared the youngsters in the use of money, gardening, farming, dressmaking etc.. Scroll down for more photos of volunteers at work, and some of the young adults who are now living in the Sunflowers homes for independent living. Now you can listen back to the excellent radio documentary by journalist Grainne McMahon for i102-104fm who travelled to Belarus with the volunteers to document the transformation of the homes for independent living.
