Our Projects
Medical Aid, Therapudic and Specialist Treatment
The Sunflowers Chernobyl Appeal provide medical aid in many different ways for those who need it most, from essential cancer medicines, to anastethics, to help with obtaining specialist treatment. Children with various illnesses are helped to recieve specialist treatment in Ireland, Belarus and Russia. This is a very important part of our work and as a result many children have benefitted.
Sick children are taken to Ireland for treatment and have benefitted from Hospitals such as Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, the National Children's Hospital, Temple Street, Dublin, the University College Hospital in Galway, the Galway Clinic, A.P.O.S and from General Practitioners, Dentists and eye specialists. We also provide medical and therapudic aids for special needs children.
The images above show Tanya in a wheelchair in the Sunflower Centre, Mikashevichi. Tanya could not walk unaided but with help from the Sunflowers she underwent surgery in Russia to enable her to walk.
This is Tanya today. The Sunflowers continue to help Tanya and other children in similar circumstances with financial aid for therapists and surgery when needed.
The photo above shows this beautiful little 8 year old girl on her birthday, her special day
This is the same little girl a short time later receiving treatment for cancer. The Sunflowers help to provide cancer medicines for seriously ill children. This little girl has since died.. Child cancer rates are extremly high in Belarus. Many different statistics on the number of cancer sufferers have been published. These statistics vary greatly, depending on who publishes them, or depending on their agenda, but one thing is certain, the numbers are rising. As voluntary workers on the ground we can witness conditions first hand, and we can verify that the rates are extremly high and Doctors struggle to keep up due to the supply of effective medicines. Your on-going support for our medical aid programme in the provision of these vital medicines really will help to save many lives.
This photos above show Vlad and Olga being fitted with their new hearing aids at the Ear Clinic in Co.Galway. Vlad attends a school for deaf children in Pinsk in southern Belarus where The Sunflowers Chernobyl Appeal carry out many projects
This young man lost his legs in an horrific accident 10 years ago and has suffered much pain and trauma since. The Sunflowers Chernobyl Appeal took Vlad to Ireland and financed his treatment to have prosthetic legs fitted at the Atlantic Prosthetic Orthotic Services at Kilcolgan Co. Galway. After months of intensive treatment by the specialists from A.P.O.S and help from The Sunflowers Vlad is now ready for a life of independence. We thank all the staff of A.P.O.S for helping Vlad, and others we have taken to the clinic for prosthetic limbs and assessment. For a full list of our projects, please click here
